Those who Served- UK

We will remember them.....

With remembrance Day almost here, it seemed fitting to honour those Hingertys who served in the UK armed forces.

More research and more detail is needed to do justice to their service- but this list is a start- if you can add further details, photos or names to the list e.g. nurses who served in theatres of war or those who served in more recent conflicts, please make contact.

Later posts will detail those who served from countries such as Australia and the USA.

Is this the Michael Hingerty born in Stafford in 1883, died in Stafford 1955, son of Michael Richard Hingerty and Catherine McDonald?

Two medals are awarded to a Michael Hingerty of the Leicester Regiment Labour Corps- The British Medal and the Victory Medal for services during WW1.

Peter Hingerty (AKA Percy Hingerty) Pte 9153

Born 4 July 1878, Tullamore, Ireland. Son of James Hingerty (1842-1925) and Elizabeth (Eliza) Flanagan (1856-?)

At the time of the 1901 Census he was living in Tullamore with an occupation of Yard Man.

As a 21 year old he enlisted in the 1st Warwickshire Regiment 21 November 1902. On his enlistment papers, he stated that he had previously served in the 13th Leinster Regiment from January 1900 to May 1902. P Hingerty is listed as serving in the Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment in Cape Colony and Orange Free State in South Africa sometime between 1899 and 1902, receiving the King's South African medal and clasps for his service.

After enlisting in 1902, he stayed in the UK until November 1904 when he shipped to the North West frontier of India and saw service in the Zakka Khel County.

He returned to the UK from India early in 1913, staying until August 1914 when he shipped to France having had two weeks leave immediately prior to embarkation.

Two months after arriving in France he was taken prisoner by the Germans and remained a POW until he was repatriated in September 1917.

In mid November 1917 Peter was discharged from the army due to illness having been designated unfit for service.

He married Mary Martin in Tullamore 29 November 1917. He died as an army pensioner in Tullamore 28 October 1931. No known children.

Joseph Hingerty (AKA James Joseph Hingerty) Pte 5369/52934

Joseph was Peter's brother. He is listed as Peter's Next of Kin on his service records. Joseph was born in Tullamore in 1885 and is possibly the Joseph Hingerty who died in St Kevin's Hospital, Dublin in 1955 of lung cancer.

He was in the 1st Royal Dragoons Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry), embarked in December 1914 and spent time in Chelsea Hospital in 1946 and 1947.

He was awarded the British, Victory and Star medals.

There is a J Hingerty of the Irish Dragoons listed as facing a court martial in October 1915 at Farfey (Ref # WO213/6) - is this the same man? What was the charge? What was the outcome?
