1921 UK Census

  Family historians have been waiting anxiously for the release of the 1921 UK Census. It is now available.  What does it tell us about Hingerty families in the UK in 1921? A search for HINGERTY in the 1921 UK Census on Find My Past tells us that there were two Hingerty families in the UK in 1921 plus one single male.  Both families were in Stafford and the single male was in Pewsey in Wilshire. The first family was headed by Michael Hingerty and his wife Mary E (Norwood).  They lived in Stafford with their son Robert and daughter Catherine M. Robert was 10 years 10 months old and Catherine was 6 years 11 months old. Both children were full time students. Michael worked as a "Boot Shoe Operative". The second family was headed by John Hingerty and his wife Mary (Beckett). They had five children ranging in ages from 13 to 5 years old.  All the children were students.  John was a pensioner. Rita and John Hingerty of New York- Marbles Champions!

  On 20th June 1932 the Middletown Times Herald of Middleton New York, reported on a championship marbles competition with Rita and John Hingerty as the defending champions! Rita and John were brother and sister.  Rita was born in New York in 1921, she died a spinster in 1990. John was born in  New York in 1918, he died a bachelor in 1998. John and Rita were two of the seven children of Patrick Joseph Hingerty (1879-?) and Mary Duffy (1879-1959). Patrick was born in Toomevara, Tipperary and had emigrated to the USA with his sister Mary Ann.  Patrick and Mary Ann seemed to have sailed back and forth from the USA to Ireland a  number of times, before they both settled down in New York. Their sister Bridget emigrated to the USA before them. She married John Deegan in New York in 1897 and had nine children. Patrick married Mary Duffy in Manhattan in 1907. Patrick, Mary Ann and Rita were some of the seven children of Patrick Hingerty ( ?- 1918) and Mary Ryan (1836- 1882) of Nenagh, Tipperar

Gassed in Their Beds- Catherine and Daniel Hingerty of Stafford

  Black Walls (South) Stafford In November 1922, Catherine Hingerty, the wife of Michael Richard Hingerty, and her son Daniel died in their beds from leaking gas. They lived at 30 Blackwalls Road, Stafford. (A previous blogpost outlined the story of the Hingerty's of Stafford  The Hingerty's of Stafford ) There were many newspaper reports of the tragic deaths.
