Hingerty YDNA Project Report September 2023

Image
What we know now that we didn't know before: 1. All Hingertys are related . We have now tested 11 Hingerty males who represent at least 2 male testers from each of the 4 existing Hingerty lines who have males alive today. They all match each other on both STR and SNP testing. That is, they all share a common direct male ancestor. 2. The Time to Most Distant Common Ancestor (TMDCA) is currently estimated to be around 1717 . This date may change as more testers are tested and more data becomes available. 3. Using this current date of 1717 as a ball park figure and estimating the number of generations needed to 'fill in the gaps' from the known most distant ancestors of each of the 4 lines, we can guesstimate that the Hingerty testers are about 7th or 8th cousins to each other. 4. Our Hingerty testers match (more distantly) Harrington males from Cork . This supports the hypothesis that we were all originally of the O'Hingerdell clan which occupied lands in the Cork townl...

Invitation to Ingerton and Hingerton males to join the Hingerty YDNA Project

UPDATE April 2024: SUCCESS! An Ingerton male descendant of Thomas Hingerton/Hingerty (who lived in Roscrea, Tipperary in the 1800s) took a BigY700 test at Family Tree DNA.  The results became available in April 2024. The results show that this descendant shares a direct common male ancestor with 11 Hingerty testers (who represent each of the 4 Hingerty family branches with living males in the world today). It is currently estimated that this common ancestor would have been born about 1700. These results show that the surnames Hingerty, Hingerton and Ingerton are closely related. In the 1700s they shared a single male ancestor. Now we need a Hingerton tester and an Ingerton tester from the USA, to make more connections between these rare surnames. If you are an Ingerton or Hingerton male, or know of one, PLEASE have them contact me  hingerty@one-name.org or chingerty@redlocust.com Are you a male with the surname Ingerton or Hingerton? We need you!

A SNP for "our John"- Hingerty YDNA Project Report April 2023

Image
The Big Y 700 test results for tester SH from Australia are now in.... and the good news is that they have revealed a SNP (a YDNA mutation/variation) that most likely formed when John Hingerty (1813 Tipperary-1889 New South Wales) was conceived! Our Hingerty YDNA tree now looks like this (the new SNP being marked with a star) Thank you to SH who tested- his results have made this identification of the "John Hingerty" SNP possible. As stated in the January YDNA report: Our focus now needs to turn to the Irish and Stafford lines. You need two testers to both be positive for a SNP and all others to be negative, for a new SNP to be named and dated.  To achieve this state of affairs you need two men who are closely related to test.   This has yet to be achieved on the Irish and Stafford lines as there are to date only one tester on each of these lines.  Our research cannot progress without these additional testers. Further testers on these two lines will assist us to: -...

Hingerty YDNA Project- January 2023 report

Image
Background: We currently have nine Hingerty BigY700 testers representing the four exisiting Hingerty lines with living Hingerty males. We have the results of eight of the tests, the most recent (BH, USA) becoming available this month (January 2023). The ninth test (SH, Australia) was only taken and posted to the lab in Texas in late December. We will have those results in a few month's time. We are using a combination of: * Genealogical data * STR data from YDNA testing (111 Markers) * SNP data from YDNA testing (BigY700)  to answer our two research questions  Are all Hingertys related?  How are they related? Thank you to our "Hingerty Heroes" JH, PH, MJH, SH, BH, MH, WH, DH and RH for taking the YDNA tests and allowing our research to progress. (Click  here  to view a video presentation introducing you to YDNA and the Hingerty YDNA Project.) What the results have revealed to date: All Hingertys are related: STR Evidence: All Hingerty testers match at the STR 11...

Hingerty One Name Study Statistics- December 2022

Image
Hingerty One Name Study (including Ingerton and Hingerton) Statistics as at December 2022 (as supplied by My Heritage) As at mid December 2022 there were 2,652 people in our Hingerty, Hingerton, Ingerton tree. (We do not yet know if the Hingerton and Ingerton surnames are variations and if we all share the same common male ancestor many years ago- YDNA testing of Ingerton and Hingerton males would soon tell us if that is the case- however, while we await volunteers for testing, we will assume we are all somehow related as the family lines seem to be closely aligned back in Ireland.) My Heritage supplies statistics based on trees- here are some interesting facts about our tree. We are split evenly between males and females and the living and the dead .......... I am surprised we don't have birth countries for more people in the tree. I need to review the entries in the tree and make sure all countries have been typed into the birth field...... Only 605 living people in the tree ha...

From Roscrea to Wellington (via Leeds)- Ingertons in New Zealand

Image
From Roscrea to Wellington (via Leeds)  Ingertons in New Zealand Roscrea is a market town in northern Tipperary, Ireland. It has about five and half thousand inhabitants today and it had a similar number in 1821.  It is one of the oldest towns in Ireland.  It has always been an important trading town as it was located on an ancient highway. It was also home to families of Hingertys and Hingertons..... some of whom become Ingertons. Wikipedia We have no birth or baptism record for Thomas Hingerton but he is believed to have been born about 1810/1815 in Roscrea, Tipperary (according to later records).  When he married Anne McDonnell in Roscrea in 1827 he was known by the surname HINGERTON. In the years 1847, 1848, 1851 and 1853 Thomas was listed in the Griffiths Valuation as leasing land to farm in the Loughpark, Roscrea area- he is listed as HINGERTON. However, when two of his sons were born (John 1835 and Thomas 1839), Thomas and the sons were listed as HINGER...
