A SNP for "our John"- Hingerty YDNA Project Report April 2023

Image
The Big Y 700 test results for tester SH from Australia are now in.... and the good news is that they have revealed a SNP (a YDNA mutation/variation) that most likely formed when John Hingerty (1813 Tipperary-1889 New South Wales) was conceived! Our Hingerty YDNA tree now looks like this (the new SNP being marked with a star) Thank you to SH who tested- his results have made this identification of the "John Hingerty" SNP possible. As stated in the January YDNA report: Our focus now needs to turn to the Irish and Stafford lines. You need two testers to both be positive for a SNP and all others to be negative, for a new SNP to be named and dated.  To achieve this state of affairs you need two men who are closely related to test.   This has yet to be achieved on the Irish and Stafford lines as there are to date only one tester on each of these lines.  Our research cannot progress without these additional testers. Further testers on these two lines will assist us to: -...

Hingerty YDNA Project- January 2023 report

Image
Background: We currently have nine Hingerty BigY700 testers representing the four exisiting Hingerty lines with living Hingerty males. We have the results of eight of the tests, the most recent (BH, USA) becoming available this month (January 2023). The ninth test (SH, Australia) was only taken and posted to the lab in Texas in late December. We will have those results in a few month's time. We are using a combination of: * Genealogical data * STR data from YDNA testing (111 Markers) * SNP data from YDNA testing (BigY700)  to answer our two research questions  Are all Hingertys related?  How are they related? Thank you to our "Hingerty Heroes" JH, PH, MJH, SH, BH, MH, WH, DH and RH for taking the YDNA tests and allowing our research to progress. (Click  here  to view a video presentation introducing you to YDNA and the Hingerty YDNA Project.) What the results have revealed to date: All Hingertys are related: STR Evidence: All Hingerty testers match at the STR 11...

Denis and Patrick: Are They Brothers?

Image
Why do we think that Denis and Patrick were brothers? I have found no direct documentary evidence that they were brothers ....... Online trees that have them as brothers have no sources for the relationship. They were both married in the Monsea, Tipperary area in a similar time period. Denis married on 6 February 1834 with residence listed as Loghorna. I have been unable to find this location on Google maps- there is a Lahorna.... could this be the same place?? Witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Hogan and Mary Wh (indecipherable). Patrick married on 25 February 1835 with residence listed as Drumineer which is 1 1/4 hour walk from both Monsea and Lahorna (opposite directions). Witnesses to his marriage were William Gleeson and Catherine Quirke. Therefore, while they were both married in the Monsea parish area, it does not appear that they were both living in the same immediate area and did not share close friends or relations as witnesses to the nuptials, nor were they witnes...

Ingerty- are they Hingerty?

Image
Who are the INGERTYs? A search for the surname INGERTY on forebears.io which lists the surnames of the world, produces no results. There are no family trees on Ancestry with Ingerty families in them. A search on Face Book for Ingerty results in four very strange looking listings that do not seem to be attached to real people. A search of the major on-line genealogy sites for the surname Ingerty does not produce large numbers e.g 35 references world wide on Find My Past. Many of the references, once the original document is sighted turn out to be wrongly indexed FOGARTYs or FLAHERTYs. If you consider the state of many of the original documents, as per the picture above, you can well understand the difficult task faced by indexers!  Others turn out to be wrongly attributed Hingertys. One example is an entry in the NSW Government Gazette for September 1888 which clearly lists a land sale of a block of land in DeBoos Street Temora involving a J. Ingerty. However, it is much more...

Hingerty One Name Study Statistics- December 2022

Image
Hingerty One Name Study (including Ingerton and Hingerton) Statistics as at December 2022 (as supplied by My Heritage) As at mid December 2022 there were 2,652 people in our Hingerty, Hingerton, Ingerton tree. (We do not yet know if the Hingerton and Ingerton surnames are variations and if we all share the same common male ancestor many years ago- YDNA testing of Ingerton and Hingerton males would soon tell us if that is the case- however, while we await volunteers for testing, we will assume we are all somehow related as the family lines seem to be closely aligned back in Ireland.) My Heritage supplies statistics based on trees- here are some interesting facts about our tree. We are split evenly between males and females and the living and the dead .......... I am surprised we don't have birth countries for more people in the tree. I need to review the entries in the tree and make sure all countries have been typed into the birth field...... Only 605 living people in the tree ha...

Are all Hingertys related? YES!

Image
My father always said "all Hingertys are related".  To test his assertion, in May 2021 I launched the Hingerty Surname One Name Study. This study included the use of YDNA testing of living male Hingerty name bearers to prove that they did (or didn't) share a common direct male ancestor. To date seven Hingerty males have tested, with at least one tester for each of the four existing Hingerty lines  (Australia 3, USA 2, Stafford 1, Ireland 1).  The results for the most recent tester have started to come through including the match lists for the 111 STR Markers. Green- Australia , Blue- USA , Orange- Stafford All the seven Hingerty testers are a match to each other at the 111 STR Marker level. This means that all seven share a common direct male ancestor within genealogical time. So, we can say with certainty that all Hingerty name bearers alive today share a common ancestor and are therefore related. My father's assertion has been proven! Thank you to the "Hinge...

R-FTB79413- The USA Hingerty Haplogroup!

Image
R-FTB79413  The USA Hingerty Haplogroup! Recently 'WH' of the USA tested with the BigY700 YDNA test at FTDNA and his results are in! .... and, because of his test, we have a new branch on the Tree of All Mankind that represents the descendants of Thomas Rice Hingerty born in 1864 in the USA. How exciting is that! And....(drum roll please)....we are one step closer to identifying (and therefore being able to estimate a date for) the shared direct male ancestor of all Hingertys alive in the world today!  The Hingerty YDNA Tree now looks like this: Note: You may have noted changes in the date predictions from my previous  post on this topic. As more men test generally on BigY700, and as more Hingerty men test, the time estimates are refined- a YDNA test is the test that keeps giving as FTDNA constantly refine results as more tests are taken. The 'Holy Grail' is to identify the SNP Variant/Haplogroup for the men: *   John ? ( Australian Hingerty ancestor ),...

John Hingerty (1885-1940)- Military Service

Image
John Hingerty (1885-1940) North Staffordshire Regiment 45573 Labour Corps  654333 John Hingerty served his country in WW1.  He served in the North Staffordshire Regiment and the Labour Corps and was awarded the Victory and British War medals. He later received a military Pension. Unfortunately that is all that we know of his service from direct evidence. A search of available online military records for the period and research undertaken on behalf of a descendant of John Hingerty (MH) by a researcher at British Army Ancestors, has resulted in very few records. A short summary of the research undertaken by British Army Ancestors was reported on Facebook June 26 2022 at 2pm: The Derby Scheme What was the Derby Scheme?- it was a process of recruitment instituted by the UK government in 1915 using locals to pressure able bodied men (married and single) in their neighbourhood into enlisting. The scheme was needed due to the enormous losses being suffered in the early ...
