Ingerty- are they Hingerty?

Who are the INGERTYs?

A search for the surname INGERTY on forebears.io which lists the surnames of the world, produces no results.

There are no family trees on Ancestry with Ingerty families in them.

A search on Face Book for Ingerty results in four very strange looking listings that do not seem to be attached to real people.

A search of the major on-line genealogy sites for the surname Ingerty does not produce large numbers e.g 35 references world wide on Find My Past.

Many of the references, once the original document is sighted turn out to be wrongly indexed FOGARTYs or FLAHERTYs. If you consider the state of many of the original documents, as per the picture above, you can well understand the difficult task faced by indexers!

Others turn out to be wrongly attributed Hingertys. One example is an entry in the NSW Government Gazette for September 1888 which clearly lists a land sale of a block of land in DeBoos Street Temora involving a J. Ingerty. However, it is much more likely that this is John Hingerty.

Hingertys who lived at Black Walls in Stafford were consistently listed as Ingerty in lists of occupiers in the 1800s. Mr Ingerty of Black Walls Stafford noted in the Census Summary Book of 1911 would really be Hingerty.

There are many examples of Hingerty being listed as Ingerty in Lancashire and Leicesterhire. It seems that the English like to dispense with the "H". This was also the case with Hingerton and Ingerton where the dropping of the "H" was often associated with service in the British army or emigration to the UK midlands.

Therfore we might suspect that the Fanny Ingerty listed as domestic servant in Salford Lancashire in 1861 is the same Fanny Hingarty who married Samuel Lewis in Manchester, Lancashire in 1867.

The dropping of the "H" did not only happen in England however. The family of William Hingerty and his wife Eleanor Rafter of Waterford, Ireland were variously listed as Hingerty and Ingerty in the late 1700s.  I am not sure how Honour Ingerty of the same parish as William and his family, who married in 1788 fits into the picture. One would assume that she is related to William, more likely a sister than a daughter........

There are, as always, a few mysteries that cannot be explained away easily as a mis-indexing or a known Hingerty:

* Mary and Ann Ingerty who are listed together in the index of births in Leeds in 1872. Being an index it gives no details. Their birth records would need to be purchased to identify their parents and where they might fit into the picture, as would the birth record for

* Rebecca Brown with father James Brown and mother Ingerty born in Melbourne in 1854.

* Louisa Ingerty who was baptised in Wales in 1845 and is listed as the illegitimate daughter of Edward Ingerty and Anne Roberts.

* Michael Ingerty baptised in Athboy, Meath, Ireland with father Owen and mother Margaret Hart.

* Patrick Ingerty charged in Chester County in the English midlands in 1852 for larceny - given 2 months in jail.

* Hanora Ingerty 20 year old arrived in NY from Liverpool in 1837.

* Patrick Ingerty 50 year old manufacturer born in Ireland, his wife Mary E (born in USA), children William 25 year old millhand, Mary C 21 year old lady, Eddie 12 year old student. All listed in the 1892 Census for Saratoga New York. A search for Patrick, William and Eddie Ingerty in later census in the USA has yielded no results.

And then we have John Ingerty also known as Joseph and who also used the aliases Smith, Hutchinson, Hall and Haggarty and is listed by all these alias in court proceedings in the UK for crimes such as desertion from the army, robbery, drunkedness and disorderly behaviour from 1854 until at least 1875..... we will never know what his real name was!

So, who are the Ingertys?

They seem to be an often mis-indexed name variation of Hingerty.

Each of the mysteries listed above would need to be tracked down to be absolutely certain.

Would anyone like to take up the search?
