Hingerty, Hingerton, Ingerton- Are They Related?

Image
In a previous post I listed some of the various ways that the surname HINGERTY can be recorded or indexed.  Hingerty- How do you spell that? But sometimes there are surnames that appear not to be a spelling variation or an indexing error, but different names altogether- or are they? A case in point are the surnames HINGERTON and INGERTON.... 1. Are these surnames totally independent of each other and the surname Hingerty?  OR 2. Are they related to each other because way back in time they all derived from the older Gaelic name of O hlongadail? OR  3. Are they more closely related and all from the same wider family group with some branches changing the spelling of their name since/during the 1800s????? Hingerty and Hingerton appear in records about the same time and in the same geographic areas in Ireland, making it look very much like they were variations of each other. Evidence has been found of there being 'shifts' between all three names in the early records indicating p

North Tipperary Church Records- Good News & Bad News

Nenagh RC Church 1906 North Tipperary Church Records- Good News & Bad News My Holy Grail is a Baptism record for my direct ancestor John Hingerty (?1813-1889) who arrived in Sydney as a farm servant in his twenties in 1841.  He reported that he was from Templemore, Tipperary. Having found a John Hingerty leasing farming land in Barnane-ely from 1823 to 1836 (Tithe Applotment Lists), and Barnane-ely being located not far from Templemore, I pinned my hopes on this being 'my' John's father (or close relation) and that I would find church records in this area of Tipperary.   I trawled through church records for any north Tipperary parish as they became available online. Parish records for North Tipperary are found in various places and in various formats (indexed, unindexed, filmed, paper based etc)- on line records have been increasing in number and coverage over the past few years. It was always my hope that as more records were made available,  one day John Hingerty&#

John Hingerty (1885-1940)- Military Service

Image
John Hingerty (1885-1940) North Staffordshire Regiment 45573 Labour Corps  654333 John Hingerty served his country in WW1.  He served in the North Staffordshire Regiment and the Labour Corps and was awarded the Victory and British War medals. He later received a military Pension. Unfortunately that is all that we know of his service from direct evidence. A search of available online military records for the period and research undertaken on behalf of a descendant of John Hingerty (MH) by a researcher at British Army Ancestors, has resulted in very few records. A short summary of the research undertaken by British Army Ancestors was reported on Facebook June 26 2022 at 2pm: The Derby Scheme What was the Derby Scheme?- it was a process of recruitment instituted by the UK government in 1915 using locals to pressure able bodied men (married and single) in their neighbourhood into enlisting. The scheme was needed due to the enormous losses being suffered in the early stages of the war.

New Discoveries! Hingerty YDNA Update- July 2022

New Discoveries! Hingerty YDNA Project Update July 2022 Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has recently introduced a new suite of tools (currently in BETA) to assist dating on their Big Y haplotree.  Applying these new tools to the 5 Hingerty Big Y tests taken to date has greatly assisted in the dating of our Hingerty YDNA tree. Australia: Three of the Hingerty testers to date (JLH, PH, MH) are direct descendants of Thomas Joseph Hingerty born in Australia in 1868.  Thomas was the youngest son of John Hingerty who was born in Tipperary about 1813 and emigrated to Australia in 1841. We have not been able to verify John's birth date or place, nor have we identified his parents with 100% certainty. This research is ongoing. Testers JLH, PH and MH all share the same haplogroup R-FTB81293 However, we do not know if their shared mutation was formed in their most recent shared ancestor Thomas Joseph Hingerty OR his father John Hingerty. Using the new Discover tools we are told the following: Unfor
