Rita and John Hingerty of New York- Marbles Champions!

On 20th June 1932 the Middletown Times Herald of Middleton New York, reported on a championship marbles competition with Rita and John Hingerty as the defending champions!

Rita and John were brother and sister.

Rita was born in New York in 1921, she died a spinster in 1990.

John was born in  New York in 1918, he died a bachelor in 1998.

John and Rita were two of the seven children of Patrick Joseph Hingerty (1879-?) and Mary Duffy (1879-1959).

Patrick was born in Toomevara, Tipperary and had emigrated to the USA with his sister Mary Ann.

Patrick and Mary Ann seemed to have sailed back and forth from the USA to Ireland a  number of times, before they both settled down in New York. Their sister Bridget emigrated to the USA before them. She married John Deegan in New York in 1897 and had nine children.

Patrick married Mary Duffy in Manhattan in 1907.

Patrick, Mary Ann and Rita were some of the seven children of Patrick Hingerty ( ?- 1918) and Mary Ryan (1836- 1882) of Nenagh, Tipperary.

Go to Patrick Hingerty's profile page on the Hingerty Working Tree on Ancestry to see documents and facts relating to this family.

The last Hingerty name-bearer of this line was Rita and John's nephew Paul J Hingerty. He was born in 1945, married Marilyn Marchio in the late 1970s and died in 2003.

No children were listed in his funeral notice in The Poukeepsie Journal 29 July 2003. It looks likely that he was the last of his line.

Now, back to that championship marbles competition- unfortunately for Rita and John they were defeated on the day and their campion status was handed on to others. Their time in the marbles limelight was over.

You can read all about the play off in local newspaper articles in the Middleton Times Herald on June 1 and 20:

In the lead up to the competition there was a page one article that included a photo of John and Rita:

After the competition there was a lengthy write up:
