1921 UK Census
Family historians have been waiting anxiously for the release of the 1921 UK Census. It is now available.
What does it tell us about Hingerty families in the UK in 1921?
A search for HINGERTY in the 1921 UK Census on Find My Past tells us that there were two Hingerty families in the UK in 1921 plus one single male.
Both families were in Stafford and the single male was in Pewsey in Wilshire.
The first family was headed by Michael Hingerty and his wife Mary E (Norwood).
They lived in Stafford with their son Robert and daughter Catherine M.
Robert was 10 years 10 months old and Catherine was 6 years 11 months old.
Both children were full time students.
Michael worked as a "Boot Shoe Operative".
The second family was headed by John Hingerty and his wife Mary (Beckett).
They had five children ranging in ages from 13 to 5 years old.
All the children were students.
John was a pensioner. He had served with the North Stafford Regiment.
Michael and John were brothers.
They were both younger sons of Michael Richard Hingerty and his wife Catherine McDonald.
Three older sons: Daniel (died 1922), James (died 1909) and William (died 1913) never married.
A daughter Mary Ann died as young child (died 1881).
Daniel died in 1922 in the same gassing accident that killed his mother Catherine.... so they should have appeared in the 1921 Census- why are they not in the Census?????
Oh but they are there...however they were incorrectly indexed as HENGERTY (even though their names clearly read as HINGERTY on the Census return) and thus did not appear in the original search at Find My Past:
Daniel was out of work at the time of the Census.
They lived at 30 Black Walls North where they had lived since at least the 1901 census.
Mary ran a small shop at this address as per Kelly's Directory of 1912 and 1921
So, who was the single Hingerty male living in Pewsey, Wiltshire in 1921?
He was Joseph Hingerty a 41 year old Private in the army who had been born in Kilbride in King's County, Tipperary Ireland.
Joseph was one of the seven children of James Hingerty (1842-1925) and his wife Elizabeth (Eliza) Flanagan (1856-?). They lived in Quarry Row Tullamore.
In the 1901 Ireland Census Joseph was living at home with his parents and siblings. He was a general labourer.
In 1911 and again in 1912 Joseph was charged with being drunk and incapable on a public street.
From 1914- 1920 he served with the 1st Royal Dragoons Machine Gun Corps Cavalry.
He was awarded the Victory, British and Star medals for his war service.
In the 1921 Census index at Find My Past his address is listed as Fittleton Pewsey Poor Law Institution Central Flying School Upavon, Pewsey. He is listed among other army personnel on the Census return.
This address is a bit confusing as there was a Poor Law Union Institution in Pewsey, there was also a cavalry training facility at Fittleton right next door to Pewsey, and later the cavalry facility became an airfield and air training facility. So, which facility was Joseph in during April 2021 when the Census was being taken??? Is he ill, in active service or undertaking training??????
The next time we find Joseph in any records are in Electoral Rolls for 1946 and 1947 when he is in the Royal Chelsea Hospital.
There is a 76 year old Joseph Hingerty, bachelor, who died 15 February 1955 at St Kevin's Hospital in Dublin. Could this be the same Joseph Hingerty?
If you have any further information about any of the 14 Hingertys
