John & Marcella Martin

Marcella Hingerty 1862-1940

Guest blog post by Carmel Peek- Marcella descendant.

Born on the 11th August 1862 at Limestone Creek, Yass, New South Wales, Marcella Hingerty was the 8th child born to John and Isabella Hingerty.

Along with her siblings she moved with her parents to Cootamundra where she learnt hotel keeping and farming.

It was in Cootamundra that she met and married John Martin on the 12th June 1881. John had moved with his two brothers from Lada Vale (Gunning) to Cootamundra after the death of their father Thomas Martin in 1865.

Soon after their wedding, John and Marcella took up residence at their property on the Junee Road out of Temora, they called Fairfield.  It was here that their first child, Isabella Ann was born 3 September 1883. Her sister Bridget Therese arrived 3 years later on 11 August 1885 followed by Thomas John on 8 July 1888 and Mary Evelyn on 8 May 1891.

Like many others at the time, John and Marcella and their children travelled to Yalgogrin and West Wyalong seeking their luck in the goldfields until they finally settled down again in Temora.

We know this because Marcella documented their moves in her family Bible which indicates the family:

"Left Temora for Yalgogrin 10 Aug 1893

Left Yalgogrin for Wyalong Aug 1904

Left Wyalong for Temora May 1905"

During their travels the last two children of the Martin family were born in Yalgogrin. Donald Patrick arrived on 17 May 1894 followed by Margaret Ellen who was born on 9 September 1897 but sadly died in infancy on 9 July 1898 and was buried in Yalgogrin.

We also know that Marcella and John cared for John's brother William's two girls after their mother Mary Ann was killed by a falling tree in 1882. The girls were Mary Martin born 21 February 1879 and her sister Theresa (Tess) Martin who was born 16 December 1880.

What is not clear, however, is when the two girls actually moved into the Martin home of their aunt and uncle. Given their young age at the time of their mother's death, did they arrive to live with John and Marcella the year after their wedding?

We do know from Ethel Kiley that Marcella had told her that the two girls lived with them up until they went to boarding school and that because there were two Mary Martins living in the household, Marcella referred to her daughter Mary Evelyn as May, to avoid confusion.

Tess Martin married John Mathias Kennedy in 1907 a brother of James Volney Kennedy becoming a sister in law to Isabella Agnes Kenndey nee Hingerty. Tess and John had 2 daughters and 2 sons.

Mary Martin married James Easy on dec 29, 1901. Sadly, Mary died on 2nd dec1908 leaving two small children,  James aged 5 and Winifred age 3. Almost a repeat of her own significant loss of her mother as a child.

Marcella's obituary in August 1940 described her as " a quiet and retiring nature, by her many friends, lovable traits endeared her to a large circle of friends who will deplore her passing. Her kindly actions and thoughtful neighbourliness made her a general favourite with all whose pleasure it was to know her."

John Martin died 6 February 1925 at the age of 75 years. In his obituary mention was made that Marcella and John's son Thomas was the first man to enlist from the Temora district, going on active service to Rabaul and afterwards to France.

Thomas did return home from WW1 to his wife Beatrice Morcom daughter of William and Elizabeth Morcom. However, Beatrice died in 1927 at Dungog. Thomas married again in 1934 to Flora Harrop Anderson and they had a daughter. Tragically, Thomas was killed in a horrific rail crossing accident in Townsville on 1 September 1947. His wife Flora and married daughter survived him.
