Who are the Ingertons of the USA?

Lt William Henry INGERTON 1835-1864
Lt William Henry INGERTON 1835-1864
Ingerton is a very rare surname.

 Forebears.io estimates:

According to Forebears, Ingertons are found in USA, Ireland, UK and New Zealand.

The Irish historian John Grenham notes that no Ingertons are listed in  the Griffiths Valuations of Ireland in the mid 1850s. He links the name to the surnames Hingerton and Hingerty.

As was discussed in a previous blog post Hingerty, Hingerton, Ingerton- Are they related? the three names often intertwine, especially back in Ireland in earlier years.

This blog post will document Ingertons who moved out of Ireland and emigrated to the USA with a focus on the possibility of Ingerton namebearers from these family lines being alive in the USA today.

Connecticut and Ohio-  Cornelius

The story of Cornelius has already been told in the previous blogpost concerning the relationship between the surnames Hingerty/Hingerton/Ingerton........

Cornelius and Winnie had three sons and three daughters

It looks like there are no Ingerton namebearers alive in the USA from Cornelius' line.

Please contact me if you have information refuting this claim.

An extra twist to the tale? No records have been found for a marriage of Cornelius and Winnie in Ireland or the USA, however, a marriage record has been found for a Connor Ingerton and Winifred Connolly in Roscrea, Tipperary, Ireland 15 May 1850.

Could this be the marriage record for Cornelius and Winnie??

Ohio and Indiana- Orphan Robert

Robert Ingerton first appeared in US records in the1850 Census living in an orphanage in Hamilton Ohio. He was eight years old and was reported to have been born in England in 1842.

His next appearance was a marriage record of 9 January 1867 when he married Maria Frances Williams, a farmer's daughter of Putnam Indiana.

In the 1880 US Census Robert was a married Farmer (wife Maria) with four children living in Warren, Putman Indiana. He was reported to have been born about 1838 in Canada of Irish parents.

The story of Robert's past quickly settled into having been born in Canada in 1842 to Irish parents and father's name as William. This is pretty much what his son reported as the Informant at Robert's death in 1925.

Is this the truth or is it a story orphan Robert told his family about his past?

There is no birth record for Robert in Canada. There are however the following:

In 1831 " William Ingerton Wife" travelled on the steam ship Chambly from Quebec to Montreal.

A William Ingerton is listed in the Canadian Genealogy Index as being resident in Toronto in 1836.

A William Ingerton was listed from November 1838 to April 1840 as having received pay as a member of the Canada and British Army Militia 2nd Battalion Upper Canada.

A William Ingerton was listed as paying taxes in Toronto in 1856

However, if this is Robert's father why is Robert in an orphanage in Ohio in 1850 while his father is still alive in Toronto??

Ingerton is a rare surname, it would be tempting to believe that, if Robert claims his father to be William Ingerton in Canada, then this William is his father. However further research is needed to be confident.

But then we still need to ask the question- why would an orphan with Irish parents, born in Canada be found in an orphanage in Ohio?

Was he sent to Ohio because of a relationship with the Ingertons of Ohio? But Cornelius and Winnie are in Connecticut in 1850 and are not recorded as living in Ohio until 1860.

If there were other relations in Ohio, why is he living in an orphanage and not with his relations? Ohio is a long way from Toronto Canada.....

Whatever is the truth of Robert's beginnings, he went on to have his own family and descendants:

Once again it looks like there are no living Ingerton namebearers from this line.

Please contact me if I am missing any living descendants of Robert.

Ohio, Texas, California- William Henry

William Henry Ingerton was reported to have been born in Ohio about 1835- either at Guildford or Dayton, as reported on two separate documents. His parents are not noted in any of his records.

He enlisted into the 3rd US Infantry Band at Santa Fe New Mexico as a 15 year old in August 1850.

He went on to serve in various military units across the USA until his death. He fought in the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Corinth. He was promoted throughout his career and reached the rank of Captain in 1864.

William Henry seems to have been married to Anna V (maiden name unknown). In the 1880 Census for Philadelphia a widow Anna Ingerton was listed as being born in Pennsylvania to Pennsylvanian parents in 1841. In the 1880 Census she was living with daughter Clara Ingerton who was born in Washington. Clara's father was listed as being born in Ohio. Nothing more is known of Anna or her daughter Clara.
Is this William Henry's widow and child?

However, it seems that Anna was not William Henry's only wife. He was married to two women at the same time. Anna V Ingerton of Philadelphia was listed as his widow and was paid a military pension by the US Army, but there was also a marriage record for him when he married Martha Hannah Sargeant in Ohio in July1864.

A few months later, according to a biography on Find a Grave he "died as a result of a pistol wound from an assassin" in Knoxville Tennessee (he was serving in the army in Tennessee at the time) on 8 December 1864 and was buried (in an unmarked grave) in Ohio.

William Henry and wife Martha had one son, also named William Henry born five months after his father's death in May 1865 in Ohio.

In the 1880 US Census young William Henry and his mother Martha Ingerton (a teacher) were living in Texas. Why did they move to Texas?

Young William Henry married Ida Wheatly in Texas in January 1894. They had nine children.

It would seem that there are Ingerton name bearers who are descendants of William Henry Ingerton living in California today.

Phillip Sheridan (Rhodes) Ingerton 1894-1951 seems to have grandsons (and a great grandson?) in California.

If you are a descendant of Philip Sheridan (Rhodes) Ingerton, I would love to hear from you.

Why did Phillip Sheridan adopt the name Rhodes?

Who was the saddle maker in the family?
Harry Ingerton is listed as a saddle maker at the Ingerton Saddle Shop in Texas in 1945. Were all the Ingerton saddles for sale on the internet today made by Harry?

Massachusetts- William and Catherine

William and Catherine were two of the sixteen children of William Ingerton 1838-1891 and his wife Mary Foley 1846-1904. This couple moved around a bit during their married life (Clare, Limerick, Cork) and William's birthplace is unclear.

William used the surname Ingerton consistently throughout his adult life.

William and Mary's son William was born in Cork in 1866 and died in Tewksbury Massachusetts in 1910. He married Mary Josephine Higgins in Cork in 1896. William, Mary Josephine and two sons emigrated to USA in 1900.

A third son was born in Massachusetts in 1902. Sadly, the eldest son William Joseph died in 1902. A fourth son, also named William Joseph was born in Massachusetts in 1905.

It seems that there are no Ingerton namebearers alive today in USA from this line.

Please contact me if I have missed any descendants of William Ingerton and Mary Josephine Higgins.

Catherine Ingerton (daughter of William Ingerton and Mary Foley) was born in Clare in January 1874. She emigrated to Massachusetts in about 1907 (year varies on Census records) and married Timothy Gleeson in August 1908 in Wakefield Mass. They had five children (four daughters and one son). Catherine died in 1948 in Wakefield Mass.

California- Elizabeth and Thomas (and maybe Hannah?)

Two further children of William and Mary Foley emigrated to the USA.

Elizabeth Ingerton was born in Ireland about 1882. She is listed in the 1901 Irish census as living in Cork and arrives in Philadelphia about 1903 (dates vary across different documents). In December 1910 she married Patrick Joseph Murray in San Francisco California having  been a servant in the Abraham household in San Francisco earlier that year when the Census was taken.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) and her husband Patrick had five children.

A Hannah Ingerton is listed in the 1910 US Census in San Francisco as a servant in the Lauter household. Is this Hannah sister to Thomas and Elizabeth who was born in Ireland in 1883?

Hannah does not appear in any other records so we cannot be sure she belongs in this family- but dates and locations do make it seem very likely.

Lizzie's brother Thomas Ingerton was born in Cork in 1883. He travelled to the USA at about the same time as Lizzie (once again arrival dates vary across documents). Did they emigrate and travel across the USA together?

It would seem likely as Thomas ' first child Thomas Eugene was born in San Francisco in 1913. Thomas and his wife Mary Elizabeth Cooney had four children.

It seems that there are no Ingerton namebearers alive today in the USA from this line.

Please contact me if I have missed any living descendants of Thomas Ingerton and Mary Cooney.

Mysteries

As is usually the case with surname studies, records are found referring to a single individual for whom no further evidence can be found. They cannot be placed into a family tree as there is no indication of where they belong. USA Ingerton mysteries include:

If I have missed any Ingerton families who are living, or who ever lived in the USA, please let me know.

If you are related to the Ingertons of California, I would love to hear from you.

How do all these Ingertons relate to each other and are they related to Hingerton and Ingerton?

UPDATE April 2024: SUCCESS!

An Ingerton male descendant of Thomas Hingerton/Hingerty (who lived in Roscrea, Tipperary in the 1800s) took a BigY700 test at Family Tree DNA.

The results became available in April 2024.

The results show that this descendant shares a direct common male ancestor with 11 Hingerty testers (who represent each of the 4 Hingerty family branches with living males in the world today).

It is currently estimated that this common ancestor would have been born about 1700.

These results show that the surnames Hingerty, Hingerton and Ingerton are closely related.

In the 1700s they shared a single male ancestor.

Now we need a Hingerton tester and an Ingerton tester from the USA, to make more connections between these rare surnames.
