Are all Hingertys related?

All Hingertys are related

or so my father, John William Hingerty (1923-2008) always claimed.

In order to test out this theory, in July 2021,
I launched the Hingerty One Name Study

A One Name Study aims to research the genealogy and family history of all persons with a given surname- collecting all incidences of the surname and organising surname bearers into family trees.

The following video explains: What is a One Name Study?

The Hingerty One Name Study aims to:
  • research the origins and history of the surname;
  • locate all recorded incidences of the surname in Ireland and immigrant countries (Australia, USA, England);
  • reconstruct family trees;
  • explore migration, frequency and distribution patters of the surname;
  • conduct a YDNA project to assist family tree reconstruction.
The study will be supported by:
  • the Hingerty One Name Study Website hosted by the Guild of One Name Studies, including a tree of Hingerty name bearers organised into family branches. The tree is a work in progress, initially documenting the Hingerty surname in the immigrant countries of Australia, England and the USA. Photos and historical documents will be added to individuals in the tree over the coming months. Click on the link and check out if 'your' Hingerty ancestors are in the tree.
  • the  Hingerty YDNA Project . This project has been set up to assist with identifying the various family lines. Please contact if you are interested in joining this YDNA project.
