End of the Line Part 3- The last of the Tipperary Hingertys?
End of the Line Part 3-
Martin Hingerty and Family
The Last of the Tipperary Hingertys?
Irish census 1901 and 1911
There was one other Hingerty family listed in the 1901 and 1911 census- however, you would be forgiven for not finding them at first glance, as they were registered as HARRINGTON.
(Daughter Johanna is missing from the 1911 Census- where is she????)
A previous blogpost looked at Martin Hingerty/Harrington and his shift to and fro with his surname/s in the Census and across other records. "Martin Hingerty or Harrington?"
https://hingerty.blogspot.com/2021/09/martin-hingerty-or-harrington.html
Today's post will focus on the children of Martin Hingerty/Harrington and his wife, Catherine (Kate) Hogan.
The youngest child of Martin and Kate was Edward Hingerty.
Edward was born 10 June 1895 in Lisduff.
On 25 July 1928 Edward married Catherine O'Hea.
Edward died 3 November 1947 at Crumlin, Moneygall.
Unfortunately, I have found no other information regarding Edward, nor any indication of children or descendants.
The youngest daughter of Martin and Kate was Norah Hingerty.
Norah was born 26 February 1893 in Lisduff.
Descendants of Norah Hingerty list her husband as James Shelly.
A search for a marriage between a Shelly and a Hingerty was unsuccessful BUT on 4th March 1924 a Norah HARRINGTON of Lisduff married a James Joseph Shelly.
Johanna HINGERTY was listed as a witness (Norah's older sister?) and her father was listed as Martin HARRINGTON.
It seems that this family used the surnames Hingerty AND Harrington interchangeably.
Norah and James had five children- three sons and two daughters.
Nora Shelly died at the young age of 38 on 31 August 1932 at Lisduff, Moneygall. An inquest was held and the cause of death was determined to be heart failure due to natural causes.
Nora's older sister Johanna Hingerty was the Informant for the death registration.
The eldest child of Martin and Kate was Johanna Hingerty.
However, her Baptism certificate issued in 1954, while silent re the date of her birth, listed her as being Baptised on 1st May, weeks before she was born???
In a recent email, MK a descendant of Norah Shelly nee Hingerty/Harrington, stated that Johanna King nee Hingerty lived with their family until her death in the 1980s and that the family believed her to be the last of the Tipperary Hingertys.
Johanna with grand niece & nephew, Kilcolman Offaly c1952 |
I have been unable to find a marriage record or a death record for Johanna as the online marriage indexes stop at 1945 and the online death indexes stop at 1971.
Once we can confirm a 1980s death date for Johanna, we will be able to award her the title of the "Last of the Tipperary Hingertys", the other contender for the title having died in 1978.
I will update this blog once a death date has been confirmed..........
