USA- Four Founding Families

To date I have identified four family groups relating to early Hingerty arrivals in the USA.

Family 1: William Hingerty is the 'founding father' of modern day Hingertys in the USA.

The first record for William Hingerty is his marriage to Rachel Kitely (some later records list her as Hannah) in Alexandria, DC in March 1801.

It is very likely that all native born Hingertys alive today in the USA are descendants of William's only son, Alfred who was born in Virginia in 1804.

Family 2: Three of the children of Patrick Hingerty and Mary Ryan of Toomevara, Tipperary, Ireland emigrated to the USA.

* Bridget was born in Toomevara, in 1869. She arrived in New York in 1891. She married John Deegan in New York in 1897. They had nine children.

* Mary Ann was born around 1876. She is listed as being from Nenagh, Tipperary when she arrived in New York in 1896 and again in 1904 in the company of her brother Patrick Joseph. Mary Ann married Michael Shelley in New York in 1905. They had seven children.

* Patrick Joseph was born in Toomevara in 1879. He arrived in New York with his sister Mary Ann in 1904, but had previously emigrated to New York in 1900 and possibly 1893.He seems to have also arrived again in 1906. He married Mary Duffy in New York in 1907. They had seven children. Their son, Thomas Kevin Hingerty (1910-94) had one son Paul J Hingerty (1945-2003). It seems that Paul died without children and thus this line of the Hingerty surname died out.

Family 3: Jeremiah (Jerry) Hingerty. The US Census of 1880 for Baltimore indicates birthdate and place for Jeremiah as 1822, Ireland. He married Elizabeth Kenny in February 1852 in Baltimore, Maryland. They had three sons who received their sacraments in the Catholic church in Baltimore. No marriages or children have been found for the sons.

The last record for Jeremiah in the USA is in the 1880 Census where he is listed as a widower living in the almshouse in Texas, Maryland (indexed as Jeremiah Hingelton). No death record has been found for him in the USA to date.

There is a Jeremiah Hingerty who was born in Clonasee, Laois, Ireland in 1818. He died in the workhouse in Mountmellick, Laois, Ireland as a widower in 1900. Is this the same Jeremiah Hingerty?

There is a newspaper report of an Emily Hingerty in Baltimore in June 1845 when an Alfred J Plowman was charged with attempting to break down her door.  Emily's name appears in a newspaper list of unclaimed letters for a Miss Emily Hingerty in New Orleans in 1852 and in 1854 Emily Hingerty is noted in the will of Anna Maria Bell (31/32 year old spinster) who leaves a diamond beast pin and earrings to Emily 'as a token of my remembrance and regard'. Emily is listed as a nurse in a city Directory for Columbia DC in 1885. Is Emily connected to Jeremiah? Too old to be a daughter...maybe a sister???

Family 4: Cornelius Hingerty: In the 1850 US Census there is a C (ink blot- but could be Cornelius) Hingerty 21 year old labourer from Ireland living in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.

Search for missing friends in The Boston Pilot 4 Dec 1858. Cornelius Ingerton of Tipperary last known in Stamford Conn 5 years prior- information to be sent to his sister Ann via Michael Sheedy NY. Sisters Mary & Bridget of NY also missing.

In the 1860 US Census for Boston, Ohio there is a Cornelius Ingerton born 1825 in Ireland with wife Winnie and three children. The first child was born in Connecticut and the later two children were born in Ohio. In the 1870 Census the child Mary is not listed.

In 1865 a Cornelius Hingerty of Boston, Ohio is listed as 'over age' in a draft registration list.

In city directories for 1907-1911 a Cornelius J Ingerton lives in Akron Ohio with wife Ruth. He is a clerk and a rubber worker. Is this the same man?

No Cornelius Hingerty has been found in Irish records. No death record found for Cornelius in the USA.

Other Hingerty arrivals:

There were a number of individual Hingerty early arrivals into the USA- they will be the subject of a later blogpost.

Are you a descendant of any of the four founding families?

Do you have further information about the families of Cornelius or Jeremiah?

I would love to hear from you!
