Martin Hingerty or Harrington?


Martin Hingerty was baptised 16 September 1846. 

His parents were Ned Hingerty and Judith Tierney. Their residence was Castletown, Tipperary.

Martin Hingerty of Crimler was charged with being drunk on the streets of Roscrea town on 25th April 1876.


Martin Hingerty married Catherine Hogan in June 1890 in the Roscrea registration district.

Martin Hingerty and Catherine Hogan registered a daughter, Johanna Hingerty in 1891 (Roscrea). 

Martin Hingerty and Catherine Hogan registered a daughter, Norah Hingerty in 1893 (Roscrea).

Martin Hingerty and Catherine Hogan registered a son, Edward Hingerty in 1895 (Roscrea).


1901 and 1911 Census

Martin Harrington, wife Catherine Harrington, daughters Johanna and Nora Harrington and son Edward Harrington were listed in the 1901 and 1911 Census, living in Lisduff, Tipperary.

Martin Hingerty of Lisduff registered his various dogs in 1915, 1916, 1917, 1918 and 1920.

Martin Hingerty of Lisduff was charged and fined for allowing his ass to wander onto the road in October 1917.


(No death record has been found for a Martin Hingerty. There are a few possible Martin Harrington death registrations but there are not enough details to confirm if any of them are 'our' Martin.)

Why did Martin and his family choose to be listed as Harrington in 1901 and 1911?
Did they decide to be Harrington on the Census or did the enumerator make the decision for them?

While we may never know what caused the temporary change of name, it does indicate the ongoing relationship between the two names even into the 20th Century.
