In the Griffiths Valuation of 1850, Michael Hingerty is listed as the tenant of a house and land in the townland of Millbrook, Tipperary, valued at 3 pounds and 9 shillings per year. It is marked as Lot 11 on the map.

The Griffiths Valuation was the first full scale property evaluation in Ireland. It was managed by Richard Griffith and was published between 1847 and 1864. While it was designed to place a value on all property for the purposes of setting rents, it operates for family historians today as a listing of Irish households during this period as no other sources remain for the period. The final Valuation was informed by data gathered into House Books, Revision Books and other records, some of which still survive. Maps accompanied the Valuation.

(See Ask About Ireland to search for a surname and find maps and records from Griffith's Valuation.)

The entry for Michael is below. Note the names of his neighbours.

Times were tough in Ireland and in 1852 the house and land Michael Hingerty was renting were sold as part of an "Encumbered Estate" i.e an estate which held debts.

To advertise the sale, a brochure was prepared listing the assets including the names of tenants and the rents they paid. Michael is listed along with his neighbours.

All must have gone well with the sale and Michael continued to live at Millbrook for the rest of his days, albeit with the occasional fine for livestock straying onto the road!

However, Michael was not the first Harrington/Hingerty to rent land in Millbrook.

In the Tithe Applotment lists for 1823 there is a listing for a James Harrington renting land in Millbrook. The surnames of his neighbours would be very familiar to Michael Hingerty.

Could this be the same plot of land or a plot of land within the same area that was later rented by Michael Hingerty?
Are James Harrington and Michael Hingerty closely related? Father/son, brothers, uncle/nephew?

Frustratingly the Tithe Applotment lists and the Griffiths Valuation were all about land and money not about households and families......

UPDATE January 2023

The house with half an acre of land is up for sale!

June 2023- the link to the real estate agent no longer functions- the land must have been sold : (

28 June 2023

Contact with the Real Estate agent revealed that the house and land were withdrawn from sale in order for the owner to apply for and gain development permission. It will be put back up for sale once permissions have been granted.

Following the directions in the advertisement proved to be difficult- maybe they had mixed up their miles and their kilometres...... however, the house and land were eventually located:

A great fixer upper!
