Who was Hingo?


UPDATE: Hingo was Denis Hingerty (1918-2000),  son of  Thomas Hingerty who was born in Preston, Lancashire in 1889. Thomas moved back to Ireland with his mother after the death of his father. He became a policeman and lived in Dublin, marrying there in 1917.


Thank you to the Thomas descendant who solved this mystery for me.


Denis is also mentioned in Roddy Doyle's book


In his book about his parents' lives, including growing up in Dublin, Roddy talks about Tommy Hingerty, Tom's sister Noeline and also their brother Denis who worked up in Belfast and who shared his fancy white bread with neighbours when he came home for the holidays.

So, Denis is mentioned in two books about growing up in Dublin- quite a literary celebrity!

Background: We currently have nine Hingerty BigY700 testers representing the four exisiting Hingerty lines with living Hingerty males. We have the results of eight of the tests, the most recent (BH, USA) becoming available this month (January 2023). The ninth test (SH, Australia) was only taken and posted to the lab in Texas in late December. We will have those results in a few month's time. Is this the Hingerty Homeland?

Is this the Hingerty Homeland? Place names in Ireland often reflect the clans and families who previously occupied the land. While researching early references to the O'hlongadail name, I came across "Family Names of County Cork" by Diarmuid O Murchadha. He mentions the townland of  Kippaghingerghill  in the Bantry area of Cork. The name Kippaghingergill translates to "Long plot of land belonging to the O'Hingerdills". This is what it looks like if we zoom in a bit closer. Overlaying the "South West Ireland 12th Century Clan Map"  with Google Maps, it looks like Kippaghingerghill is in the same area as the clan map locates the O'Hingerdill.
