Thomas Bede Hingerty and William Kevin Hingerty


John William Hingerty and Thomas Patrick Hingerty



Betty Hingerty Dessaix and Hazel Savage Hingerty




I know of four male and two female Hingerty name bearers who served in the Australian armed services in World War II.

I don't have any details on Thomas Bede's service history.

William Kevin served in New Guinea.

John William (Jack) volunteered and trained but never saw any action, while his twin brother Thomas Patrick was in Darwin at the time of the Japanese bombing.

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Hingerty was in the Women's Royal Australian Air Force and Hazel Savage Hingerty was in the Citizen's Army. Thank you to PH and AC who supplied the photo and information about Betty.

Background: We currently have nine Hingerty BigY700 testers representing the four exisiting Hingerty lines with living Hingerty males. We have the results of eight of the tests, the most recent (BH, USA) becoming available this month (January 2023). The ninth test (SH, Australia) was only taken and posted to the lab in Texas in late December. We will have those results in a few month's time. Is this the Hingerty Homeland?

Is this the Hingerty Homeland? Place names in Ireland often reflect the clans and families who previously occupied the land. While researching early references to the O'hlongadail name, I came across "Family Names of County Cork" by Diarmuid O Murchadha. He mentions the townland of  Kippaghingerghill  in the Bantry area of Cork. The name Kippaghingergill translates to "Long plot of land belonging to the O'Hingerdills". This is what it looks like if we zoom in a bit closer. Overlaying the "South West Ireland 12th Century Clan Map"  with Google Maps, it looks like Kippaghingerghill is in the same area as the clan map locates the O'Hingerdill.
