Extinct or Extant? Finding Hingerty Descendants in Australia
Are the family lines for the nine Hingerty immigrants to Australia extinct or extant (still in existence)?
Do they have living descendants?
Mary Hingerty EXTANT
Born about 1813 Ireland
Arrived Hobart Tasmania 1835
Mary was the subject of a previous post. Mary- The First Hingerty in Australia
Mary has many descendants in Australia from her two children William George Patterson and Victoria Mary Ann Patterson. Some of these descendants have been in contact and are DNA matches to descendants of other Hingerty lines. It would be wonderful if more descendants were identified, especially those who have already DNA tested and invited to upload to FTDNA and join the Hingerty All others DNA Project at FTDNA.
John Hingerty EXTANT
Born about 1813 Tipperary, Ireland
Arrived in Sydney 1841
Married Isabella McDonald in Goulburn, NSW in 1845.
John has many descendants in Australia from his 10 children. A large number of these descendants have DNA tested and some match descendants of other Hingerty lines in Australia, Stafford and the USA.
It would be wonderful if those descendants who have tested at Ancestry of My Heritage would upload to FTDNA and join the Hingerty All others DNA Project at FTDNA.
Bridget Hingerty EXTANT
Bridget arrived in Melbourne in 1848 as the 22 year old wife of Abraham Harrington. Both were listed on shipping records as being from Templederry, Tipperary, Ireland.
Their parents are unknown. Although we know that there are both Hingerty and Harrington families in the Templederry area, the lack of documents for this period mean that we don't have birth or marriage records for either Abraham nor Bridget.
Once in Australia, Bridget and Abraham eventually settled down as farmers in the Omeo region in the Victorian high country. Bridget had eight children two of whom died very young. She has many descendants from the four of her children who married.
Bridget's descendants may not be aware of their Hingerty connections as, in most trees she is listed as Hegerty or Heagerty or Harrington or Hinperty or Henarty or Unknown.......
Initial contact has been made with one descendant. It would be wonderful to make contact with more descendants on this branch of the Hingerty family tree.
Margaret Hingerty EXTANT OR EXTINCT???
Born about 1821 Toomevara, Tipperary.
Arrived in Sydney in 1841 on the same ship as her cousin (?) John Hingerty.
Her parents were William Hingerty and Mary Quinlan. Margaret was the first of four siblings who emigrated to Australia.
In 1844, the 26 year old (?) Margaret married a 53 year old convict, Edward Kehoe/Kehor.
No records have been found for children, or deaths or re-marriage for Margaret or Edward in NSW, Victoria or Queensland.
We do not know if there are any descendants of this Hingerty immigrant alive today.
Bridget Hingerty EXTINCT
Bridget was a sister of Margaret Hingerty.
Born about 1819 in Toomevara, Tipperary. On the shipping records it lists her parents as William and Mary Hingerty with the added information that her mother is living in Toomevara which seems to indicate that her father is deceased.
She arrived in Sydney in 1853 as a 20 year old dairymaid who could neither read nor write. The shipping record also tells us that she will be living with her sister Margaret Kehoe at Strawberry Hills (in Sydney).
Bridget married Martin Egan in Sydney in 1857. They had two children, Mary (1859) and Martin (1860) both of whom died as infants. Bridget and Martin adopted Bridget's niece Mary Ann White when her mother (Bridget's sister) Ann died in 1869.
Nancy (Ann) Hingerty EXTANT
Another sister to Margaret and Bridget Hingerty
Born about 1836. Arrived in Sydney in 1858 as a 22 year old general servant who could neither read nor write. Listed as from Tuam, Tipperary. Parents listed as William and Mary Hingerty, with mother living at Tuam. Bridget was listed as going from the ship to live with her brother in law Martin Egan at Surry Hills (Sydney).
Bridget married Daniel White in Sydney in 1865.
A daughter, Mary Ann White was born in 1867 at the Mcleay River in Northern NSW.
Ann died in April 1869 from exhaustion due to a difficult five day labour. A deceased girl and boy are listed on her death certificate, along with the 2 year old Mary Ann.
Mary Ann was adopted by her aunt, Bridget and uncle, Martin Egan.
Mary Ann married Michael Nolan in 1890. They had eleven children. One would expect many descendants form this large family.
Two descendants on the line of Mary Ann's daughter Bridget Winifred have been contacted, but no responses to date. More research is need to trace and contact more living descendants.
William Hingerty EXTINCT
William was brother to Margaret, Bridget and Ann. He was born about 1840 in Tipperary. He arrived in Sydney from Ballybeg Tipperary in 1862. He is listed as going from the ship to live with his sister Ann Hingerty.
William married Ann Corcoran in Sydney in 1864. Soon after William and Ann moved to Brisbane and from then on used the name Hennerty. This family has been the subject of previous blog posts.
There are no known descendants of William.
Mary Hingerty EXTANT
Mary Hingerty arrived in Melbourne in 1854 with her husband Daniel Quin. Mary was the daughter of Denis Hingerty and Anne (Nancy) Grace of Monsea, Tipperary.
She was born in 1835 and initially she emigrated to Lancaster England where she married Daniel Quin in 1853. Their daughter Mary Ann was born at sea on the voyage to Melbourne. Daniel died one year after their arrival, leaving Mary with an infant daughter.
In 1858 Mary married William Warren. They had nine children.
There are many descendants of these nine children. A number of them have been contacted via Ancestry, but we await their responses. It would be wonderful to make contact with Mary's descendants here in Australia.
John Hingerty EXTINCT
This John Hingerty was a brother of the aforementioned Mary.
He was one of the seven known children of Daniel Hingerty and Ann Nancy Grace.
John was born in 1839 in Ballyane, Tipperary.
He arrived in Melbourne in 1868 and seems to have been in contact with his sister Mary as in 1870 the licence of the Odd Fellows Hotel was transferred from William Warren (Mary's husband) to John Hingerty.
However things did not go well for John and in a few years he had debts mounting..... he left Victoria and travelled to NSW.
By January 1900 he was being treated at the Liverpool Asylum for Destitute Men. (note this was not a metal institution, but a place of refuge- see previous post Died in the Asylum ).
He died at the Liverpool Asylum just outside of Sydney, in June 1903. He never married and had no children.
Future Action
In order to further explore the links between the various extant lines and (hopefully) answer the two big Hingerty questions:
Are all Hingertys related?
How are they related?
We need:
* Further research to track, trace and make contact with descendants of all of the extant/existing lines.
* Invite living descendants of each line to DNA test (especially those in the oldest living generation), to upload to FTDNA and join the Hingerty all Others DNA Project.
* Contact those Hingerty descendants who have already DNA tested at Ancestry or My Heritage and invite them to upload to FTDNA and join the Hingerty all Others DNA Project at FTDNA.
If you can assist in any way, please contact me- many hands make light work!
