Killing Off the Kehoes ?

What happened to Margaret Kehoe nee Hingerty and her husband Edward Kehoe?

When and where did they die?

Margaret Hingerty was born about 1821 and arrived on the ship "Jane Gifford" in 1841 with her cousin (?) John Hingerty.

(Birth date unknown- would be 1821 according to her age on the shipping records or 1818 according to her age on the Request to Marry records of 1844.)

Margaret is listed on the shipping records as a housemaid from Toomevera, Tipperary. who can neither read nor write.

Her parents are listed as William Hingerty, farmer and Mary Quinlan, his wife.

In 1844 Margaret married Edward Kehoe/Kehor in Sydney after obtaining the necessary permission to marry since Edward had been a convict.

Edward was from County Wexford and had been transported to Sydney on the ship "Lonarch" in 1825 for a term of 7 years for killing a cow and a heifer.

He received his Ticket of Leave in 1830 in the Bathurst area,  one year before the end of his sentence.

At the time of their marriage Edward was about 53 years of age and Margaret was about 26 years old. They were both living at Strawberry Hills in Sydney (in the Surry Hills/Redfern area).

The next record we have for Margaret or Edward is in 1853 when Margaret's sister Bridget arrives in Sydney on the ship "Beejapore".

When sister Ann (Nancy) arrived in 1858, she was listed as going to live with her brother in law Martin Egan (Bridget's husband). When their brother William arrived in 1862 he was listed as going to live with his sister Ann Hingerty.

Can we read into the fact that none of her siblings after Bridget was listed a going to live with Margaret, that Margaret is deceased prior to 1858?

Or is there a type of 'chain migration' occurring where each newly arrived member of the family initially lives with the sibling who previously arrived?

Ann and Bridget seemed to stay close and lived in the same area of northern NSW. When Ann died in 1869, leaving a young daughter, Bridget adopted the child. There are no records indicating Margaret lived in the same area.

William moved to Queensland soon after his marriage and used the surname Hennerty hence forth. There is no evidence of Edward or Margaret living with or near William and his family in Brisbane.

No records have been found for Edward Kehoe/Kehor or Margaret Hingerty Kehoe/Kehor after 1853.

Given the age difference between Edward and Margaret, a re-marriage for Margaret was considered and a marriage in 1864 between a Margaret Kehoe and a William Davies was investigated. However, the bride was 18 years old and from Wexford, so not 'our' Margaret.

No other marriages for a Margaret Kehoe have been found in NSW, Victoria or Queensland for the relevant time period.

No births of possible children for Edward and Margaret have been found in NSW, Victoria or Queensland.

No deaths have been found for Edward or Margaret in NSW, Victoria or Queensland.

It is unusual for two people to just 'disappear' off the record in the colonies at this time..... but

Edward and Margaret do just disappear after 1853!

So... we can't 'kill off' the Kehoes.......

Hopefully one day a record will surface that will explain the fate of Edward and Margaret.....
