End of the Line Part 2- Patrick Hingerty and Family

End of the Line Part 2: Patrick Hingerty and family,

 Latteragh, Tipperary

1901 and 1911 Irish Census

1901 Census:

In the 1901 Census, Patrick Hingerty was living at 2 Church Street, Toomyvara Town, Latteragh, Tipperary.

He was listed as a fifty six year old General Labourer, born in Tipperary and unable to read.

The house was described as a 1 roomed stone/brick or concrete building with one window at the front of the house. The roof was thatch or wood.

In the same census, John Hingerty was living at 11 Chapel Street, Toomyvara Town, Latteragh, Tipperary. He was listed as twenty eight years old, single, born in Tipperary and unable to read.

John was listed as being a farm servant living and working in the Looby household.

This household (including John) lived in a stone/brick or concrete building with four windows at the front and had 2-4 rooms.

The site also contained a stable, coach house, cow house, piggery and fowl house.

John was listed as the only servant.

Patrick Hingerty 1836- 1918:

Patrick was born about 1836 in Tipperary.

He married Mary Ryan (1836-1882) on 18 November 1866 at Toomevara, Tipperary.

Patrick and Mary had at least seven children born between 1867 and 1881.

The exploits of Patrick and Mary and some of their children have been described in previous blog posts:

Their eldest son William was committed to the asylum after a vicious attack on his father, Patrick in March 1883 in Toomevara. See blogpost "Died in the Asylum".

Wife Mary, daughter Margaret and Patrick himself all seemed to have died in the Nenagh Workhouse. See Blog post "Died in the Workhouse".

Their children Bridget, Patrick Joseph and Mary Ann all emigrated to New York, USA, married and had large families. See Blog post "USA- Four Founding Families".

By 1901, only Patrick and his sons John and Michael were still alive and living in Ireland.

John as we can see from the 1901 Census was living in Toomevara, but no listing for Michael has been found in the 1901 Census. Where was Patrick's son Michael in 1901???

1911 Census:

In the 1911 Census, Patrick Hingerty was listed as a 75 year old widower who worked as an agricultural labourer. He signed the form with his mark and could not read. His home was a one roomed brick building with one window and a thatched roof in Toomevara Town, Latteragh, Tipperary. Is this the same house as he lived in at the time of the 1901 Census? Unfortunately the census forms were not listed by house numbers as in the 1901 Census.

I have not been able to locate Patrick's son John Hingerty in the 1911 Census. Where is John in 1911?

I have not found any other references to this John Hingerty until his death 6 September 1949 at Sallypark, Latteragh. He is listed as a 77 year old bachelor working as a labourer. The informant for his death certificate was his niece Winifred Hingerty (also of Sallypark Latteragh) who was the daughter of John's brother Michael.

While Patrick's son, Michael Hingerty did not feature in the 1901 Census, he is found on the 1911 Census.

Michael is responsible for a large household including his wife Johanna, five young children, a niece and a mother in law.

Michael is listed as a forty year old agricultural labourer who can read and write. On the House and Building Return he was listed as HENGARTY with the brick and tile house described as having 4 rooms.

Michael Hingerty and Johanna Maher had married on 8 February 1903 at the Templederry parish in the Latteragh area. Michael was listed as the son of Patrick Hingerty. Michael was a labourer living at Ballybeg at the time of his marriage. His new wife Johanna was living at Latteragh.

Michael and Johanna had seven children.

Mary (born 1903) married Patrick Doherty March 1946. Oral history has it that Mary died early in the marriage having had no children and her husband remarried. Is this her death certificate? It seems to fit the details....

Margaret (born 1905) married Bernard McCormick in Surrey, England in 1935. Margaret had been living in Surrey for at least 5 years as she was listed on an Electoral Roll in 1930.  She died in Surrey 26 May 1973. Did she have children?

John (born 1907) Never married. He died 31 May 1978 in Latteragh.

Patrick (born 1908)  Died as a teenager, 19 February 1922 in Latteragh. His death certificate listed his cause of death as "probably heart failure".

Winifred (born 1909) Apart from being the Informant for the death certificate for her uncle John in 1949, I have found no other reference to Winifred beyond her birth registration.

Peter (born 1911) Never married. Died at Latteragh 16 September 1975.

Michael (born 1916) Never married. Died at Latteragh 16 September 1975.

(Side note: The Latteragh memorial cards inserted above were sent to my brother in law John Hegarty by a Hegarty relation living in Ireland who came across the Hingerty graves in Latteragh and, knowing John had a interest in Hingerty family history, tracked down locals and requested the memorial cards. Such cards are a wonderful family history resource and we are forever grateful to this generous Hegarty researcher who sent these Hingerty cards.)

Michael and Johanna had seven children (three daughters and four sons) between 1903 and 1916. Five are listed in the 1911 Census, the remaining two being born after the Census.

None of their sons married and I have found no evidence of children born to any of their daughters.

 Johanna died in 1932.

Michael died of heart failure at Latteragh in 1943. His daughter Mary Hingerty was the Informant.

It seems that Michael and Johanna were "the end of the line" for this branch of the Hingerty family.

Was John Hingerty who died in 1978 the "Last of the Tipperary Hingertys"?
