Letters from the Prothero Past- Part 1

Guest blog post by Carmel Peek- Marcella Hingerty descendant
Great great grand daughter of John Hingerty and Isabella McDonald

As we prepare to celebrate our McDonald and Hingerty ancestors, I have had the wonderful opportunity to reread many of the accounts written over the years by a number of our relatives including the great Ethel Kiley (nee Anderson) who has inspired many of us over the years with her reflections of how life was "in the olden days" as she frequently called them in her many letters to relatives and friends across Australia.

It was Ethel who originally developed many of our family trees and shared these with the relevant families.

Did you know that she drew each tree and what was known as butchers paper? These were stuck on her holland blinds throughout her home, and she would pull these down to show visitors

what she could share with them about their family history. Photocopies of these trees remain today in many family homes.

Ethel wrote to Mary Kemp on 14 April 1980 to include her Martin Tree for Mary to "double check" for any 'errors' at the very top of the letter so it would not be missed!!

My mother was Mary Lillian Prothero (1919-2010) daughter of Frank Prothero (1882-1966) and Bridget Martin (1885-1951).

My mum's legacy to me was the many letters she received from her cousin Ethel and I continue to review these when a question arises about an event or person within the family such as how her parents dealt with the mice plague back in the days when she was a child.

In Aug 1966, Ethel wrote to mum of her memories of the time that Frank Prothero and Bridget Martin, my grandparents, were courting in Temora and that-
