Hengerty? Is that the same name as Hingerty?

Hengerty?

Is that the same as Hingerty?

A search of records for the surname HENGERTY on Find My past yields the following:

Britain 4 records

USA and Canada 6 records

Australia and New Zealand 10 records

Ireland 21 records

The majority of these entries are incorrectly indexed HINGERTY records, however there are a few mysteries......

1. Australia:

A male M. HENGERTY sailed on the ship "Canberra" from Townsville to Brisbane in August 1920. The typed passenger list clearly has his name spelt as Hengerty. Who is he?

2. Britain:

- Dennis HENGERTY married at St George in the East, London, England. The typed index (Vol 2 Page 120) clearly has the spelling Hengerty, however it would have been typed from an original handwritten list- is this a case of a misinterpretation of poor handwriting? Who was this Dennis?

- William HENGERTY is on a typed list of army deaths 1882 Allahabad, India. Mistranscribed from original handwriting? Who is this William?

3. USA:

- Isabel HENGERTY (handwritten) was listed on the 1940 Census as a 59 year old widow lodger. She worked full time in a retail store and was born in Wisconsin. She had lived at the same address in 1935. Who is she? Who was her husband?

4. Ireland:

- an almost unreadable Baptism record has Elizabeth, daughter of Denis Hengerty (?) and Margaret Cuey (?) baptised in Killarney, Kerry in 1828.

- in 1838 a John HENGERTY was seriously assaulted by John McGawley, fracturing his skull and endangering his life in Tullamore, Offaly (King's) County. The offender absconded. Who was this John Hengerty and what was the fight about? Did John die as a result of the attack?

- In Dublin in 1918 Margaret HENGERTY (born 1890), wife of a shopkeeper died of a thrombosis and cardiac failure. Who was her husband?

- in 1921 two HINGERTY males (Timothy and John) are listed as crew on a fishing boat. They are wrongly indexed as HENGERTY. Who are they? Where do they fit into the Hingerty family tree?

A search on the surname HENGERTY at Ancestry yields two further mysteries:

1. Clarence HENGERTY sailed as part of the USA Expeditionary Forces from New York, landing in Liverpool. England 16 May 1918. Was this Clarence Lee HINGERTY who would have been 43 years old at the time?

2. A Patrick HINGERTY is indexed as HENGERTY. He signed on as crew on the ship the Mary Jane at Yougal, Cork, Ireland on 18 December 1874. Who is this Patrick Hingerty?

It does seem that Hengerty is often just Hingerty wrongly indexed or incorrectly spelt.

It is interesting to note that there are no people called Hengerty on Facebook and that a Google search for the surname gives you mostly Hingerty listings......

However, until all the aforementioned mysteries are solved we cannot be absolutely certain that every Hengerty is actually a Hingerty.

I wonder what will happen if we go looking for the surname HENGARTY?????
