 The Great Hingerty Head Count is on!

The website forebears.io reported that there were 115 Hingerty name bearers alive in the world in 2014. (Note we are talking about Hingerty name bearers not Hingerty descendants)





The forebears.io website does not disclose which data sets or definitions they used for this calculation, so the accuracy of their figure cannot be assessed.

Since we are such a rare breed, it would be great to know just how many of us there are today. and if the forebears.io distribution numbers are correct.......

and thus the Great Hingerty Head Count was launched!


First, the definition :  for the purposes of this count, 

A Hingerty Name Bearer is someone who is:

* Alive as at 30 June 2023- children and adults included

* Was born with the surname Hingerty and/or

* Acquired the Hingerty surname through marriage (and use it as their surname)

Using the tree that has been complied over the past four years as part of the Hingerty One Name Study and checking in with family members to add the latest arrivals and marriages......

Drum roll please........

The total is: 135!

These figures are very different to the forebears website distribution chart.

Age profile:

32% of the current name bearers are 70 years old or more, which leaves almost two thirds who have been born since the mid 1950s... quite a youthful profile......so Hingerty is not a dying surname. 

Long may it live!

Gender balance:

55 males born with the surname Hingerty

55 females born with the surname Hingerty

25 females have acquired the Hingerty surname through marriage and use it as their surname

Of the 55 females born with the Hingerty surname 29 use a married name as their surname (i.e not Hingerty)

Summary:

As at 30 June 2023 on planet Earth each day there are:

 106 people using HINGERTY as their surname and

135 people 'identifying' as HINGERTY.

Background: We currently have nine Hingerty BigY700 testers representing the four exisiting Hingerty lines with living Hingerty males. We have the results of eight of the tests, the most recent (BH, USA) becoming available this month (January 2023). Is this the Hingerty Homeland?

Is this the Hingerty Homeland? Place names in Ireland often reflect the clans and families who previously occupied the land. While researching early references to the O'hlongadail name, I came across "Family Names of County Cork" by Diarmuid O Murchadha. He mentions the townland of  Kippaghingerghill  in the Bantry area of Cork. The name Kippaghingergill translates to "Long plot of land belonging to the O'Hingerdills". This is what it looks like if we zoom in a bit closer. Overlaying the "South West Ireland 12th Century Clan Map"  with Google Maps, it looks like Kippaghingerghill is in the same area as the clan map locates the O'Hingerdill.
