Waterford and Kilkenny - are these our people?

There are a scattering of references to Hingerty families in Kilkenny and Waterford.

Do these Hingerty families belong to us?

How do they fit into the bigger Hingerty/Harrington picture?

The first reference is a very early one. In 1568 Dermot Hyngerty, a merchant of Waterford was granted English Liberty by Elizabeth I of England. This was documented in Fiant 1224 of 23 October 1568.

By being granted English Liberty, Dermot was renouncing his Irish rights and agreed to enjoy all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of being a loyal subject of the English Crown. He, and his children (issue) would not be held back by the laws that restricted Irish access to employment, land etc.

We know nothing more about Dermot or his family.

Note that in this period of Irish history, the only references to the surname Harrington are Sir Henry Harrington (an Englishman serving in Ireland) and Donogh oge O'Harightane of Kerry who was granted a pardon in December 1584 (Fiant 4555).

All other references in the 1500s are to the older form of the surname i.e. O'Hingerdell (and variants).

But back to Kilkenny and Waterford and areas close by....

The next reference is a Baptism for Margaret Ingerty in 1778 at Slieverue. Slieverue is in Tipperary but is very close to the county border.

Her father was William and her mother was Ellenor Rafter.

Two other Baptisms and a Marriage are listed that appear to be associated with this family group (Ingerty, Hingerty, Ingherty).

In 1809 a Mary Hingarty was Baptised at Carrick-on-Suir

Her parents were listed as Cornelius Hingarty and Bridget Walsh.

This is the only listing I have found for the Hingerty surname in Carrick-on-Suir.

In 1842 James Hingery was sent to Waterford Prison for stealing a cow. He died in the prison hospital before his one year term was served.

In 1851 Eleanor Hingerty was listed in Griffiths Valuation as leasing a house in Francis Court Waterford.

In 1858 Patrick Hingerty the son of Patrick Hingerty and Ellenora Falan of Rossmore was Baptised in Waterford.

.... and then there are no more references to the surname Hingerty in these locations.

Do the families die out or move away?

Or do they change their name to Harrington or were they usually known as Harrington and only occasionally referred to as Hingerty?

A map to help you locate the various places mentioned:

There are no Harrington listings for Slieverue, so that family must have moved or died out.

However, there is an intriguing link between Mary Hingarty's Baptism in Carrick-on-Suir in 1809 with parents Cornelius Hingarty and Bridget Walsh and a marriage between Cornelius Harrington and Bridget Walsh listed for 8 August 1808 also in Carrick-on-Suir.

Are they the same couple?

Is this another example of the surnames Hingerty and Harrington being interchangeable?

Below is a chart of references found to date for Harringtons living in Carrick-on-Suir between 1790 and 1940. The colour coding indicates possible family groups.

Are there still Harringtons living in or around Carrick-on-Suir today?

There are numerous other Harrington references for the counties of Waterford and Kilkenny... too numerous to list here... maybe one day I will take on the task of listing them all and seeing if they can be sorted into family groups and see if they cross reference to the few Hingertys listed in this post...maybe one day....

Meanwhile, if you are a descendant of Harringtons from Carrick-on-Suir or any of the places listed in this post, I'd love to hear from you! Maybe together we can work out how our two surnames are related.
