No Hingertys in Ireland!? A close call.....

No Hingerty's in Ireland? A close call.......?

We came very close to having no living Hingerty name bearers in Ireland today!

Every Hingerty family line in Ireland has either died out or 'daughtered out' (daughters do not pass on the family surname in our patrilineal society)- except for one.......

Monsea, Tipperary, Ireland

Back in the early 1800s there was a Hingerty family in the Monsea area of Tipperary.

Stafford, England

One of the boys in the family, Patrick (1811-1866) emigrated with his wife, Bridget Carroll and two of their sons to Stafford in England in the mid 1800s. All living Hingerty name bearers in Stafford today descend from Patrick's son Michael Richard Hingerty (1850-1885).

Lancashire. England

Patrick's brother Denis (1809-1864) and his wife Nancy Grace, didn't emigrate themselves, but their children emigrated to Lancashire and Australia. See blog post "One Family Three Countries" for the story of this family.

But back to our story of how we have Hingerty name bearers in Ireland today.....

One of Denis' sons, also called Dennis (born 1849), emigrated to Lancashire, England. He was residing in Lancashire in the 1871 Census and the 1881 Census.

Dennis married Mary Barrett in Lancashire in 1888. Mary was born in Maynooth, Kildare in Ireland.

Their son, Thomas was born at 11 Pleasant St Preston, Lancashire on 13 February 1889.

Sadly, Dennis died a few months later at 11 Pleasant St, Preston, Lancashire on 9th June1889.

Return to Ireland

At some point after Dennis died, Thomas and his mother must have returned to Ireland as in November 1896, Mary Hingerty of Maynooth married Morgan Byrne in Dublin.

In the 1911 Census, Mary was living in Dublin with her husband Morgan and Thomas was a gardener living in Maynooth, Kildare with his cousin Bridget Mullin.

In May 1914 Thomas joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police. His previous occupation was listed as gardener and his birthplace as Preston, Lancashire, England.

In April 1917 Thomas married Frances Kelly and the rest, as they say, is history.

Their descendants are the only native born Hingerty name bearers in Ireland today.

How amazing!

It is amazing that every other Hingerty line in Ireland died out or daughtered out.

That only one line remains in Ireland today and the continued existence of that line was dependent on one man who died so soon after his marriage, having fathered only one child and then his wife and child returning to Ireland is amazing........ we came so close to there being no Hingerty name bearers in Ireland today!

And it has been the same for other Hingerty lines in other parts of the world-

All native born Hingerty name bearers in the USA descend from William Hingerty and his son Alfred;

All native born Hingerty name bearers in Australia descend from John Hingerty who arrived in Sydney in 1841;

 The Hingerty surname has only just survived down to the present day!

If you are a Hingerty name bearer,

Celebrate your rarity!

Give thanks for those few individuals who kept our surname alive!
