Hingerty One Name Study Statistics- December 2022

Image
Hingerty One Name Study (including Ingerton and Hingerton) Statistics as at December 2022 (as supplied by My Heritage) As at mid December 2022 there were 2,652 people in our Hingerty, Hingerton, Ingerton tree. (We do not yet know if the Hingerton and Ingerton surnames are variations and if we all share the same common male ancestor many years ago- YDNA testing of Ingerton and Hingerton males would soon tell us if that is the case- however, while we await volunteers for testing, we will assume we are all somehow related as the family lines seem to be closely aligned back in Ireland.) My Heritage supplies statistics based on trees- here are some interesting facts about our tree. We are split evenly between males and females and the living and the dead .......... I am surprised we don't have birth countries for more people in the tree. I need to review the entries in the tree and make sure all countries have been typed into the birth field...... Only 605 living people in the tree ha...

Can we give "Father Hingerty" a Name?

Image
"Father Hingerty" is the man in whom SNP R-FTB79857 formed. He is the Most Recent Male Ancestor to seven Hingerty males from Australia, USA, Stafford and Ireland who have taken the BigY YDNA test at FTDNA. (Two more tests are pending) The estimate for his birth year moves around as more Hingerty males test and thus more SNP data is available for analysis. The estimate when the above chart was produced was 1746.  The latest estimate has moved further back in time and currently has a Mean of 1712.  Let us therefore suppose he was born sometime in the early to mid 1700s. Do we know of any Hingerty males alive in Ireland around this timeframe? The records are few and far between and often do not contain important information such as location....however, we do have a few candidates: 1. James Hingarty is listed in Betham's Genealogical Abstracts for 1749.  "James Hingarty, son Ryan, son Joseph, daugh Elinor, Kings County."  We therefore assume that James is married ...

Are all Hingertys related? YES!

Image
My father always said "all Hingertys are related".  To test his assertion, in May 2021 I launched the Hingerty Surname One Name Study. This study included the use of YDNA testing of living male Hingerty name bearers to prove that they did (or didn't) share a common direct male ancestor. To date seven Hingerty males have tested, with at least one tester for each of the four existing Hingerty lines  (Australia 3, USA 2, Stafford 1, Ireland 1).  The results for the most recent tester have started to come through including the match lists for the 111 STR Markers. Green- Australia , Blue- USA , Orange- Stafford All the seven Hingerty testers are a match to each other at the 111 STR Marker level. This means that all seven share a common direct male ancestor within genealogical time. So, we can say with certainty that all Hingerty name bearers alive today share a common ancestor and are therefore related. My father's assertion has been proven! Thank you to the "Hinge...

Hengerty? Is that the same name as Hingerty?

Image
Hengerty?  Is that the same as Hingerty? A search of records for the surname HENGERTY on Find My past yields the following: Britain 4 records USA and Canada 6 records Australia and New Zealand 10 records Ireland 21 records The majority of these entries are incorrectly indexed HINGERTY records, however there are a few mysteries...... 1. Australia: A male M. HENGERTY sailed on the ship "Canberra" from Townsville to Brisbane in August 1920. The typed passenger list clearly has his name spelt as Hengerty. Who is he? 2. Britain: - Dennis HENGERTY married at St George in the East, London, England. The typed index (Vol 2 Page 120) clearly has the spelling Hengerty, however it would have been typed from an original handwritten list- is this a case of a misinterpretation of poor handwriting? Who was this Dennis? - William HENGERTY is on a typed list of army deaths 1882 Allahabad, India. Mistranscribed from original handwriting? Who is this William? 3. USA: - Isabel HENGERTY (handwri...
